overview

The Maila Socks are toe-up socks with a pretty, vintage lace pattern that originally came from a Baden teacher's book from 1894. The pattern reminds me a bit of the keyboard on my old typewriter.

The MailaSocks begin with the toe-up star toe. To give the socks more width at the instep, a pointed triangle is knitted under the sole. The heel is rounded with shortened stitches. The subsequent heel panel reduces the stitches increased at the sole.

Finally, there is a cuff made up of two right-twisted and two left stitches, which are bound off elastically with a yarn over at the end.

Knitting techniques included

As with many sockshype sock designs, the Maila socks also use special knitting techniques:

  • Toe Up – from the tip to the cuff
  • The sling star tip toe up
  • An easy-to-knit lace pattern
  • A heel with spike increases under the sole
  • The elastic cast-off with yarn over
