BERNINA Gathering Foot #16 (wide)

The BERNINA Gathering Foot #16 wide is a special presser foot for decorative gathering on light to medium-weight fabrics. Its design supports deliberately uneven fabric feed, creating lively and natural-looking ruffles. The integrated foot slit makes the foot particularly efficient: a gathered fabric layer can be attached to a flat fabric section directly during sewing. This allows flounces, ruffled trims, and decorative fabric inserts to be created with fewer individual steps. This wide version is specifically designed for BERNINA machines with a 9 mm stitch width.

Attach the BERNINA ruffler foot #16 wide to the compatible 9 mm BERNINA sewing machine. For initial attempts, a straight stitch with a central needle position, a stitch width of 0 mm, and a stitch length between 2 and 5 mm is recommended. Place the fabric to be ruffled under the presser foot and align the fabric edge with the right edge of the foot. When sewing, the fabric will be gathered automatically by the special sole shape.

For stronger ruffling, the stitch length can be increased and, if necessary, the upper thread tension can be raised. Guide the fabric smoothly and without pulling to avoid hindering the feed. If the ruffle is to be sewn directly onto a flat fabric piece, the fabric to be ruffled lies under the foot. The flat fabric piece is placed into the foot indentation so that it is not ruffled. Since the gathering cannot be altered after sewing, the desired fabric amount should be determined beforehand with a sewing sample.
