Why isn't my embroidery file displayed?
If an embroidery file doesn't appear on your machine's screen, there can be several reasons. The most common reasons fall into three categories:
- Incorrect file format
- Error saving to USB stick
- Unsupported or corrupted file
1. Is the correct file format available?
Embroidery machines only accept specific file formats. For example, a Brother machine requires .PES, Bernina prefers .EXP, Janome .JEF, and Pfaff and Husqvarna use .VP3.
- Check that you have copied the correct format for your machine model onto the USB stick.
- Be careful not to accidentally transfer the preview graphic (PDF or PNG) instead of the actual embroidery file.
- Only use the embroidery files from the designated folder.
2. Save correctly: Prepare the USB stick correctly
The USB stick must meet certain requirements:
- FAT32 formatted (not exFAT or NTFS)
- No additional subfolders, the embroidery file must be in the main directory
- USB stick not too large (max. 16–32 GB recommended)
Tip: Don't use USB sticks with flashing LEDs or special functions. Embroidery machines won't be able to read them correctly.
Format USB stick (Windows 11 PC)
If your USB stick is not recognized or appears corrupted , you should format your USB stick.
Please note that formatting will delete all data on the storage device.
- Insert the USB stick into the USB port of your switched on Windows PC
- Start Explorer with [Windows key] + [E] and select the removable disk by a single click
- Right-click on the disk and select the "Format" menu.
- In the dialog window, select the formatting type »Fat32«
- Click »Start« to start formatting your USB stick
- Confirm the message “Data will be deleted…” with OK
Format USB stick (Mac / Apple Computer)
If your USB stick is not recognized or appears corrupted , you should format your USB stick.
Please note that formatting will delete all data on the storage device.
- Insert the USB stick into the USB port of your switched on Mac.
- Open Disk Utility [cmd]+[Space] (then type Disk Utility in the search field)
- Select the USB stick you want to delete in the left bar
- Select Delete (1) on the top page
- Select the format MS-DOS file system (FAT32) (2)
- Confirm with Delete (3)

3. Embroidery file damaged or incompatible?
In rare cases, the embroidery file itself is corrupted or incompletely converted. Especially with .DST or .EXP files without color definitions, machines may ignore the file.
- Test the file in embroidery software such as Creativate or Bernina V9.
- If necessary, download the file again or choose a different format.
- Pay attention to the extension: A file with “.pes” in the name is not necessarily valid if, for example, it was exported using the wrong software.
Alternative: Direct import via Wi-Fi or app
Modern embroidery machines allow you to import embroidery files via Wi-Fi or a manufacturer's app (e.g., Artspira for Brother, mySewnet/Creativate for Pfaff & Husqvarna). The following also applies here:
- Only supported formats are recognized
- A stable Wi-Fi connection is necessary
- In some apps, you have to explicitly “send” or share the file
Embroidery files are corrupted in WhatsApp
Did you send an embroidery file via WhatsApp? WhatsApp compresses files when sending them, altering the file structure in the process. An embroidery file sent via Messenger may be corrupted and cannot be opened. In this case, download the original file to your device directly from the provider.
Embroidery files from Elna / Janome are not displayed
The Elna brand was acquired by Janome in 2006, so Elna and Janome embroidery machines share some of their technology.
If you are working with an Elna or Janome embroidery machine, there are a few tips to ensure that the embroidery files are recognized:
- Save the embroidery file in .JEF file format on a USB stick in the subfolder /emb/
- Do not use umlauts (e.g., ä, ö, ü, etc.), special characters (e.g., !?&/(), etc.), or accents (e.g., é, í, à, etc.) in the file name. Ideally, the file should be named hund.jef, for example.
- Save/copy the embroidery file immediately to a USB stick and not somewhere on your hard drive first (especially applies to Mac)
- If you are using an embroidery program, when saving, select the embroidery hoop that you will actually use for embroidery (or enter the corresponding size, e.g. 140×140 mm).
If none of these solutions work, we recommend contacting the manufacturer of your embroidery machine.
Summary
If your embroidery file is not displayed:
- Check the correct file format
- Save the file correctly to a suitable USB stick
- Make sure the file is not corrupted or incompatible
