The BERNINA B 790 ULTRA mainly expands on the B 790 PRO for free-motion and computerised quilting. We assess BISR, stitch-plate recognition, Jumbo Stitches and BQM tools and explain who benefits from upgrading.
The BERNINA B 790 ULTRA targets demanding sewing, embroidery and quilting. Compared with the B 790 PRO, its defining additions are the integrated stitch regulator, sensor stitch plate and extended computerised-quilting tools rather than an entirely new base machine.
| Area | ULTRA | PRO |
|---|---|---|
| Free-motion quilting | integrated BISR | separate BERNINA stitch-regulator foot |
| Stitch plate | compatible sensor plates detected automatically | plate selected in settings |
| Jumbo Stitches | selected stitches up to 500% | no equivalent ULTRA feature set |
| BQM quilting | additional placement, morphing, crop and connect tools | precise embroidery placement without the complete ULTRA quilt set |
BISR measures fabric movement and adjusts stitch formation, helping maintain even stitch length when your hand speed changes. It supports meanders, feathers, ruler work and graphic lines. It does not remove the need to guide the quilt: table space, fabric weight, needle, thread and practice still matter.
The machine recognises compatible sensor plates and visibly marks an incompatible stitch. This is useful when changing between straight stitch, 9-mm decorative work and quilting. Selected stitches can be enlarged to 500% for borders and graphic accents; the function does not apply to every stitch or combination.
Quilt designs can be positioned, scaled, rotated, cropped and connected in embroidery mode. Three-point placement with morphing helps with triangles and irregular areas; two- and four-point placement remain available. BQM projects can be stored in the machine’s personal folder.
The base includes Dual Feed, the BERNINA Hook with jumbo bobbin, automatic thread cutter, multi-directional sewing, stitchprecision², automatic needle threader and pinpoint laser. The L module with Smart Drive Technology handles designs up to 400 × 210 mm.
This is a large premium machine. Allow table space for the machine, module and quilt, and budget for instruction. Current price and package details are on the BERNINA B 790 ULTRA product page.
The ULTRA is not an automatic replacement for every B 790 PRO. Its value is greatest when BISR, sensor plates and expanded BQM tools are used regularly. New buyers seeking one broad platform for quilting, sewing and large embroidery gain the most; existing PRO owners should decide project by project.
If you already own a sewing machine and deliberately want embroidery only, compare it with our practical review of the dedicated BERNINA B 500 embroidery machine.
