Sew an alphabet cushion: personal pillows from A to Z

An alphabet cushion is a personal gift, name decoration and approachable sewing project in one. A correctly printed pattern, suitable fabric and evenly distributed filling keep the shape neat around curves and inside corners.

Materials and preparation

• the printed pattern for your chosen letter
• two sufficiently large fabric layers; match the nap on plush fabrics
• matching thread, fabric scissors or rotary cutter and clips or pins
• stuffing and a hand-sewing needle for the turning gap
• optional embroidery or appliqué, completed before assembly

Print and cut the pattern

Print the PDF using the setting specified in the document and verify the scale before cutting fabric. At the original scale, the finished cushion is just under 40 cm tall. If you resize it, first check on paper that narrow bridges, openings and the turning gap remain practical. Place the layers right sides together and align the nap on plush fabric.

Sew the cushion step by step

1. Transfer the letter and all pattern marks. Mark an accessible turning gap on a reasonably straight outside edge.
2. Add embroidery or appliqué to the front now, keeping enough distance from the seam line.
3. Clip the layers right sides together. Sew slowly around the outline and secure both ends of the turning gap.
4. Trim only where the shape requires it. Clip curves and carefully snip inside corners without cutting the seam.
5. Turn the cushion, shape corners with a blunt tool and add stuffing in small portions. Close the gap with ladder stitch.

Neat curves and inside corners

Use a slightly shorter stitch around tight curves and pivot in small steps with the needle down. Careful clipping works better than pulling at inside corners. Fill narrow sections a little at a time with a blunt turning tool so the surface stays even and the seams are not strained.

Personalise and finish
