Our experience with the Brother Innov-is F580: this combination machine sews, quilts and embroiders up to 180 × 130 mm. We explain its operation, strengths and limits and who it genuinely suits.

Our experience with the Brother Innov-is F580: it is an approachable sewing, quilting and embroidery combination machine when a 180 × 130 mm embroidery area matches your projects. Its automation removes repetitive steps but cannot replace correct hooping and stabilising.

Brother F580 review: our short verdict

The colour touchscreen is clear, while the needle threader, automatic upper-thread tension and cutter reduce routine work. SFDS feeding, adjustable foot pressure and sideways feed support sewing. The 13 × 18 cm embroidery area works well for names, bags, children’s clothes and small batches. Its main limit is the same area: large back designs and many ITH projects require splitting, rehooping or another machine.

Sewing: feed and convenience

The Square Feed Drive System moves fabric evenly. Adjustable presser-foot pressure helps with stretch or varying thicknesses, and an included walking foot supports layers. Sideways feed enables decorative stitching across the usual sewing direction. Needle, thread, foot and stitch still need to match the material.

Brother Innov-is F580 as an embroidery machine: the embroidery area of 13x18 cm is ideal for many designs.

Embroidery: understand 180 × 130 mm

The F580 includes jump-stitch trimming, colour sorting and on-screen rotation, mirroring and combination. Wireless transfer and Artspira reduce file handling; USB remains available. The area suits chest logos, towels, bags and children’s clothing. A multi-position hoop does not increase what can be sewn in one position.

What beginners still need to learn

  • match fabric and stabiliser and hoop securely
  • use the correct needle, top thread and bobbin thread
  • check format, size and stitch count
  • test every new material combination

Our file-format guide helps with Brother exports.

Who is the Innov-is F580 for?

  • You want sewing and embroidery in one machine.
  • Your usual designs fit 180 × 130 mm.
  • You value a colour screen, automatic tension and wireless transfer.
  • You sew stretch fabrics, bags or quilts and need adjustable pressure.

When another machine is better

Choose a larger field for big jacket backs, frequent ITH work or quilt motifs. Multi-needle production is more efficient for colour-heavy batches. If you already own a good sewing machine, a dedicated embroidery machine avoids switching modes and allows parallel work.

F580 or sewing-only F560?

The F560 shares many controls and sewing features but has no embroidery module. Choose it if you are confident you will not embroider. Choose the F580 when personalisation is a real goal and the defined field size fits.

The included upper fabric feed also allows for sewing difficult fabrics, ensuring even fabric feed from top and bottom.

Conclusion: accessible, with a clear size limit

The F580 brings sewing and embroidery together convincingly. Its strength is a comfortable start with features that remain useful as skills grow. The deciding factors are not the label “beginner-friendly”, but whether 180 × 130 mm, single-needle operation and a combination workflow suit your projects.
